Lets Talk Sun Protection!
It’s officially Summer! Time to talk sun protection. When in reality, we should be protecting ourselves from the sun all year round! Harmful and aging sun rays can pass through glass and clouds and are present 365 days a year.
Short-term sun damage shows on our skin as a sunburn. Long-term unprotected exposure will cause gradual sun damage. This sun damage accounts for about 90% of our skin aging.
There are two main types of damaging rays. UVA and UVB rays. Not only do they damage skin cells but also their DNA!! This leads to fine lines and wrinkles, irregular pigmentation, visible blood vessels, loss of elasticity and even skin cancer.
When looking for a good sunscreen we must take a few factors into consideration.
Looking for the words Broad Spectrum on the bottle of your sunscreen is very important. This will signify coverage against both UVA and UVB rays.
Chemical VS Physical:
When looking at the ingredients on your sunscreen, you only need two! Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide.
These two ingredients make up your physical sunscreen. They stay on the surface of the skin and act as little mirrors reflecting the suns rays away from the face. Not absorbing into the skin and our other organs.
If your sunscreen has a laundry list of ingredients, this is a chemical sunscreen. Most, if not all, of these have been proven in studies, to be hormone disruptors, allergens and carcinogens. They can even be found in our urine! Proving that they are in fact being absorbed into our body.
Sunscreen should be applied at least 15 minutes before going out into the sun. Leaving enough time for the product to be fully absorbed.
Then reapplied every 2-3 hours and after swimming, sweating or washing.
